In a single-day count, there were 47,749 people in Michigan who were enrolled in substance use treatment, which was a considerable increase from just over 40,000 a few years earlier.

Among the people in Michigan enrolled in a treatment program, 30.7% were in treatment for drug use only, 22.9% were in treatment for alcohol use only, and 46.4% were in treatment for both drug and alcohol use.

Nearly 620,000 people in Michigan aged 12 or older per year were dependent on or abused alcohol within the year prior to being surveyed.

More than 230,000 people in Michigan aged 12 or older per year were dependent on or abused illicit drugs within the year prior to being surveyed.

Over 560,000 adults in Michigan aged 21 or older per year in reported heavy alcohol use within the month prior to being surveyed.

Among people aged 12 or older in Michigan with alcohol dependence or abuse, about 59,000 per year received treatment for their alcohol use within the year prior to being surveyed.

In a single-day count, 7,680 individuals in Michigan were receiving methadone as part of their substance use treatment, and 1,187 were receiving buprenorphine. This is one of the only states in the country where these numbers have actually declined. The reason for this is unclear, as the population of opiate users doesn’t appear to have lessened in number.

In Michigan, among individuals aged 12 or older with illicit drug dependence or abuse, about 41,000 individuals per year received treatment for their illicit drug use within the year prior to being surveyed.
