Indiana Addiction Treatment Information

In a single-day count in 2012, less than 27,000 people in Indiana were enrolled in substance use treatment, which was a decrease from more than 30,000 people in 2008.

Among those in Indiana enrolled in substance use treatment on that single-day count in 2012, 38.4% were in treatment for a drug problem only, 20.5% were in treatment for an alcohol problem only, and 41.1% were in treatment for problems with both drugs and alcohol.

Over 360,000 people in Indiana aged 12 or older were dependent on or abused alcohol within the year prior to being surveyed. There were also more than 150,000 people abusing or dependent on illicit drugs during the previous year.

Another 363,000 people aged 21 or older in Indiana reported heavy alcohol use within the month prior to being surveyed. Of these, about 1 in 25 received treatment for alcohol use within the year prior to being surveyed.

Among the people in Indiana aged 12 or older with alcohol dependence or abuse, about 38,000 received treatment for their alcohol use within the year prior to being surveyed.

In a single-day count, more than 7,000 people in Indiana were receiving methadone as part of their substance use treatment, and over 400 more were receiving buprenorphine. Unlike most other states, these numbers have stayed fairly steady compared to five years earlier.

In Indiana, among people aged 12 or older with illicit drug dependence or abuse, about 21,000 received treatment for their illicit drug use within the year prior to being surveyed.
