In a single-day count, 5,205 Hawaii residents were enrolled in substance use treatment, which was a decent increase compared to a few years earlier.
Among the people in Hawaii enrolled in a drug or alcohol rehab in a single-day count, 33.2% were in treatment for drug use only, 17.2% were in treatment for alcohol use only, and 49.5% were in treatment for both drug and alcohol use.
In Hawaii, about 95,000 people aged 12 or older were dependent on or abused alcohol within the past year. About 29,000 people in the same age range were dependent on or abused illicit drugs over the previous year as well.
About 79,000 adults aged 21 or older in Hawaii reported heavy alcohol use within the past month.
Among Hawaiian residents aged 12 or older with alcohol dependence or abuse, about 5,000 people received treatment for their alcohol use within the year prior to being surveyed.
In a single-day count, 612 people in Hawaii were receiving methadone as part of their substance use treatment, and 87 were receiving buprenorphine. While the number of methadone users has remained fairly steady, the number using burprenorphine as a maintenance drug has substantially increased.
Among the people in Hawaii aged 12 or older with illicit drug dependence or abuse, about 4,000 of them received treatment for their illicit drug use within the past year.
