In a single-day count, 117,159 people in California were enrolled in substance use treatment, which was a decrease from 137,960 people a few years earlier.

Among people in California enrolled in drug or alcohol rehab programs in a single-day count, 41.5% were in treatment for drug use only, 16.8% were in treatment for alcohol use only, and 41.7% were in treatment for both drug and alcohol use.

In California, about 2.3 million individuals aged 12 or older were dependent on or abused alcohol within the past year. About 947,000 people in the same age range were dependent on or abused illicit drugs during the same time period. Both of these numbers have remained steady, so why has treatment enrollment been going down in the state recently?

About 1.5 million adults in California aged 21 or older reported heavy alcohol use within the past month.

Among people in California aged 12 or older with alcohol dependence or abuse, about 186,000 received treatment for their alcohol use within the previous year.

In a single-day count, 30,872 individuals in California were receiving methadone as part of their substance use treatment, and 2,154 were receiving buprenorphine. Both of these continue to gradually increase over time.

Of the people in California aged 12 or older with illicit drug dependence or abuse, about 119,000 received treatment for their illicit drug use within the year prior to being surveyed.
